The Reserves Collection consists of materials assigned by instructors as a supplement to their course. Any Faculty or Staff member, with a valid UIndy Identification Card, may place items on Reserve. The person placing an item on Reserve may choose how long a patron may keep the item from the following options: 2 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, 5 days, or 7 days. Items placed on Reserve are shelved behind the Reserve Desk. A list of the Reserves Collection is available at the Reserves Desk, and it is arranged by the instructors' last names. The Reserves Collection may also be searched online.
To check-out a Reserve Item you must have a valid UIndy ID Card. Reserves may be checked out two at a time. There is no hold policy for Reserve Materials and all renewals must be done at the Reserve Desk. Most Reserve items may be taken from the library as long as they are returned or renewed by the due date and time. Occasionally a professor specifies that an item may not leave the library.
Two-hour Reserve items may be checked out overnight as follows. The item must be checked out in person within 15 minutes of closing time and is due back no later than two hours after opening the next day. (If the next day is a holiday, the item is due within two hours of opening on the next day that the library is scheduled to be open.)
| 2-hour items | $1.00 per hour, or portion thereof, up to a maximum of $25 per item |
| 24-hour, 3-day, 5-day, and 7-day items | $5.00 per day or portion thereof, up to a maximum of $25 per item |
The replacement cost for books from the KML collection is a flat fee of $50.00. There is a replacement cost of $5.00 for lost photocopies.
Personal copies and copies from the library's general collection may be placed on Reserve. The items must be accompanied by a Reserve Form that has been filled out completely and legibly. Up to five different titles can be placed on each form. Items are processed in the order in which they are received and will be available within 48 hours.
The Reserve Forms are available a number of different ways:
Copies of articles, book chapters, etc. may be placed on Reserve. Each item must include a complete citation on the front page, and the items must be accompanied by a Reserve Form filled out completely and legibly. Items are processed in the order that they are received and will be available within 48 hours.
Use the same Reserve Forms described above.
In order to comply with "Fair Use" under copyright law, photocopies of copyrighted material are accepted for one semester only. For photocopied items to remain on Reserve longer than one semester, copyright permission must be obtained from the copyright holder and provided to the Circulation Staff. If copyright permission is not provided to the Circulation Staff, the material will be removed from the Reserve Collection at the end of the semester.
If you wish to make electronic copies available to your students, please use the ACE system to post copies.
If you wish to ensure that an item—such as a DVD—is available to you on a specific date, you may "book" the item for that date. The library will check the item out to other patrons only if their check-out period will not conflict with the booked date. Please call (788-3268) or drop by the main desk if you wish to book an item.
